Alcoa Engineering Services Contract is an engineering services contract between Alcoa and Worley covering baseload engineering work at Alcoa's Wagerup, Kwinana, and Pinjarra Refineries, WA Mining Operations & Portland Smelter. The scope of work is comprised of Engineering Support for Front End Loading, Engineering Design and Drafting, Project Management, Technical Support and Site Operational Engineering Support.

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will work closely with our existing team to deliver projects for our clients while continuing to develop your skills and experience. This role is based at the Alcoa Pinjarra site; the role requires the candidate to be based at the site office with self-travel to site (Candidate’s journey needs to be under <1.5 hr one way to site). There is flexibility to work from home 1-2 days once up to speed with Alcoa processes and site familiarisation.

You must have current unrestricted working rights for at least 6 years within Australia to be eligible for consideration and only those candidates with appropriate qualifications and experience will be contacted directly. Worley does not sponsor candidates.

What you’ll do

We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team in Pinjarra.

The role responsibilities include:

  • Deliver discipline specific engineering services that meet Worley, the client’s and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements. 
  • Undertake engineering design and technical verification of discipline project deliverables by others (within your technical capability).
  • Ensure a ‘fit for purpose’ solution from concept through to as built is developed considering safe and sustainable design, constructability, commissioning phases, operability, maintainability and decommissioning.
  • Proactively seek an understanding of the safety hazards and risks associated with the asset lifecycle of the designed product, plant or structure; be responsible for action and close out where relevant.
  • Identify issues and problems; develop appropriate and innovative solutions; and ask for assistance if required.
  • Perform and/or manage discipline specific engineering services such as:  
    • Ensure the project scope is clear and that changes to scope comply with project change management processes.
    • Prepare/assist or oversee the production of engineering calculations, drawings and documentation.
    • Ensure all deliverables are checked in accordance with Worley checking procedures.
    • Participate in project reviews, HAZIDs/HAZOPs and safety in design workshops as required. 
  • Prepare engineering estimates for the mechanical discipline in response to requests for quotation including:
    • scoping engineering requirements.
    • detail methodologies and/or engineering tasks in scope and those out of scope.
    • clarify and detail assumptions, exclusions, relied upon information and the deliverables list.
    • input into the schedule incorporating a realistic delivery sequence for the discipline with consideration to project milestones; input from other disciplines and receival of relied upon information.
    • ascertaining resources required based on availability.
  • Communicate effectively and regularly with the project stakeholders/team including the Workshare team, Lead Engineer/Designer and Project Managers.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with contractors, the client and other Worley personnel.
  • Actively contribute to the development and improvement of Worley engineering systems, processes, practices, and procedures. 
  • In a project lead capacity:
    • Manage sequence of engineering tasks at a high level to ensure delivery according to project schedules (including activities by third party contractors).
    • Be the primary interface with customer for discipline-specific engineering issues.
    • Ensure technical integrity of the discipline deliverables through the implementation of checking and design review activities.
    • Provide technical direction, control and supervision for engineering and design on the project.
    • Responsible for delivering discipline design deliverables within schedule and budget.
    • Maintain discipline task and deliverables lists for the project.
    • Manage quality and consistency within the discipline.
    • Coordinate change control and technical query process within the discipline.
    • Manage discipline resources assigned to the project; this also includes providing active feedback to individuals.
    • Reporting progress of discipline deliverables.
    • Maintain discipline files and follow the “Worley Way” processes.
    • Coordinate design with other disciplines and squad checking deliverables.
  • In a discipline team lead capacity (potential for future opportunities):
    • Working closely with the overall Site Lead to manage workload and forecast for the discipline.
    • Manage a discipline team of up to 5 personnel; allocating work to projects and nominating suitable resources for proposals.
    • Assist the department manager to carry out competency assessments.
    • Assist the department manager in interviews.
    • Providing active feedback to team members to aid in development and performance.
    • Provide overarching technical direction for the discipline team.
    • Work with the Engineering Manager to ensure technical integrity, quality and governance across the discipline is met.
    • Ensure overall consistency and quality of discipline deliverables.
    • Aid in career development of team members and providing opportunities on projects to support this.

What you’ll have

  • Tertiary qualifications with a 4-year Bachelor degree in Engineering majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Proven technical experience in the Refinery/Mining Industry or similar industry; including experience leading projects on a discipline level.
  • Extensive experience in brownfield processing plants / refineries, preferably in the Alumina industry.
  • Must have ability to work across multiple projects.
  • Experience across all phases of engineering projects.
  • Good understanding and proven experience in:
    • Equipment layout.
    • Design of pump and piping systems.
    • Fluid system analysis and design particularly of slurry systems.
    • Pipe stress analysis.
    • Design of pressure equipment.
    • Design of materials handling equipment.
    • Read and interpret drawings, including general mechanical, piping and P&ID drawings.
  • Competent in the use of relevant software such as MS Office Suite and discipline specific software including AFT Fathom / Fluid Flow 3, CAESAR II, Non compressible and compressible fluid system analysis, Navisworks, and Bluebeam / Adobe Suite.
  • A dedication to client satisfaction.
  • Excellent relationship building and stakeholder management skills.
  • You will be an enthusiastic team player, with excellent stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong technical experience, practical and leadership experience in the relevant discipline in the same or similar industry, including experience managing and leading brownfield projects and teams. 
  • Highly effective organisational skills are a must including the ability to plan, set goals, prioritise, set accountabilities, manage schedule and budget.  
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills is a must including the ability to convey information and ideas to individuals and groups and effective technical document writing and grammar skills.
